Oscars 2017

We went to the Oscars.  It was really fun and really fancy, but in so many ways I didn't expect. We went with our friends, most of whom I knew before but spend very little time on a weekly basis, as all of us have small kids (and many distractions). I tell you though, the presence of these people made the whole experience like a movie about summer camp. Every time there was someone having a "we're at the Oscars" moment, there was someone else embarrassing themselves in new and hilarious ways. There were so many toasts to the whole experience, so many vows to have a time we won't forget. We really did it as a group. We really did it right.

Here are some photos before we left, in our fancy hotel. The night before, the production company had a cocktail party for us at Chateau Marmont. It was great to see such a Hollywood landmark. The girls and I started hair and make-up at 9:30 in the morning. It took three of them for four of us (chalk that up as taking a village). I couldn't have loved wearing my dress by Elizabeth Dye more. Within 10 minutes of contacting her, she was on board to make a dress for me. She was a true collaborator, a master craftsperson, and such a talented, sweet person. A few people have asked me why I didn't make my own dress, and I'll tell you why: because this is not my area of expertise, and when you leave it to the experts, you get something so special.

We drove to the Oscars and it felt really…presidential. We were in a cavalcade of black SUVs, the roads were blocked off for miles, and security would come and look into your car intermittently. There were people screaming by the side of the road, and when I rolled down my window to take a photo of them, they screamed even louder as if they might see someone important. Sorry, people :).

We got out of the SUV onto a small patch of red carpet. We had tickets, and they were instructing us to get them out. Somehow, we thought we were going into the show right away, so we frantically tried to get some photos until someone told us there would be "a lot more red carpet to come". Oh, right! Thanks.

We went through curtains that revealed a wide and long red carpet in three parts. We were put on "track" closest to the most press, and our "handler" guided the boys to different press outlets that wanted to talk to them: talk shows, newspapers, etc. There were so many random people around: a pacific islander dance crew (from a movie called Tana), ladies carrying their violins which I presume they had played on a soundtrack to something. I saw a few famous people on another red carpet "track": Karlie Kloss getting her dress photographed, Lin-Manuel Miranda racing through the whole red carpet process. Our crew was getting text messages from friends at home that we were on TV. It was all pretty surreal.

Finally, we reached the end of the long red carpet, and the door of the Dolby Theater. We had ideas that we might get rushed through the whole red carpet process, but it actually took quite a while. We had a look in the theater from the top level, but we had tickets to seats on the floor. From monitors in the lobby, we watched most of the celebs arrive while we sipped drinks, then headed to our seats when the announcements were made that the ceremony was about to begin. As we were walking, I heard a woman apologize over and over and Ollie say, "I'll get it!". She had lost her phone in my dress!

The show was really good, wasn't it? I didn't know much of Jimmy Kimmel before this, but I thought he was excellent, and the whole show seemed to move right along. During commercial breaks they would give you a countdown, and if you didn't make it back to the theater in time you had to wait until the next commercial break, out in the lobby (with a drink in your hand and a seat filler in your seat). Our category was in the middle portion, so at a certain point we all decided no one was leaving. Production Assistants would come over and talk to us about how long it was until our category. At one point, they told a woman and her daughter to move to new seats, and then that woman WON AN OSCAR for Costume Design. So we were waiting to see if they moved any of us, too. All of the Visual Effects nominees were together and as the announcement got closer, I saw the (eventual winners) in front of us, texting their friends as we were texting ours: "I'm nervous." "I don't think this is going to happen for us". In that moment, we were all going through the same thing. It was kind of sweet. Our whole row held hands as the envelope was opened.

Alas, the win was not ours (ours, meaning our boys', of course). Robert Legato and his crew from "The Jungle Book" won. They sat right in front of us so we got to congratulate them, and in return, we got to play with their statue afterwards. By the way, Oliver made me watch Legato's great TED talk (right HERE). It's worth a glance, even if you have very little interest in Visual Effects.

After the ceremony, we went to The Governer's Ball, which is on site at the Dolby Theater. It felt like a Carnival Cruise, with a band two stories higher, playing pop muzak. The wait staff came around with fancy gelato, followed by mac and cheese, followed by sushi rolls and pot pies and cake pops. I was sure this was not going to end well. Then we "Elton John's Oscar Party", which was ending by the time we got there. Andrew Rannells seemed to be enjoying the company of about 100 "fans" on the dance floor blaring with techno music. We knew it was time to go back to the hotel; we had been on this "journey" for more than 12 hours now.

The next morning, we all flew home together, to our babies and our babysitters and our houses. It was all really good fun, and within hours we were emailing photos and telling each other how much we missed each other. It was certainly a memory for the archives, a whole lot of fancy and a whole lot of fun. If you get the chance, I highly recommend it ;).

PS. Image of our row is by TiffSchiff, below that is a screen shot from TV!

Oscars Luncheon 2017

January left us with a bang. Mr. Jones found out that he was nominated for an Oscar for his Visual Effects work on Kubo and the Two Strings along with three of his colleagues at Laika. It's been quite exciting. Last Monday, I joined him LA to attend the Oscars Nominees Luncheon. It was definitely a "moment" in life, and it made me so excited for all of them, and of course for the ceremony itself.

The luncheon was held at the Beverly Hilton, and began with some milling around (and cocktails) among the nominees and their guests. We knew we would sit at a "mixed table" for the lunch, meaning we could be with Producers, Actors, etc. We anxiously awaited who we might sit with, as we struggled to introduce ourselves to new people in the room. We saw some celebrities and I just couldn't resist asking a few for photos (but I'll save that for my Instagram account). Finally, they asked us to find our table. It was like a really fancy wedding, with gorgeous bunches of roses on the tables and waiters ready to pour your wine as soon as you sat down.

We took our seats, and met the people at our table. There was a producing team, four sound designers, and an Academy Ambassador, a member of the Academy who is there to facilitate conversation at the table and make the event really welcoming. Our Ambassador had the most adorable wife who had one agenda - to take photos with the most famous people in the room, to the bemusement of her husband. It was hilarious, and got me hyped to talk to the actors and musicians I wouldn't have otherwise (again, I refer to the Instagram).

They played a comedy video about how to give a good speech should you win, and there were words from the Academy President. Then they read the names of every nominee individually, and invited them to stand at the front for the "class photo" (Oliver is in the second row, second in from the oscar, to the left). This goes on for the better part of an hour and when everyone is there, the music crescendos and they announce, "Ladies and Gentleman, the Oscar Nominees of 2017". They know how to give you an emotional moment, in Hollywood, that's for sure.

When the photo ended, I was still snapping photos of them all when a man next to me said, "This is really special for them, isn't it?" I looked at him and said, "It's really special". He was an Academy Embassador, as well. Then I found Oliver, spoke to another actor I loved, and got in a cab to LAX.

When I had saw Oliver a few days later, he showed me a photo on his phone of his colleague Brian and said, "Look who Brian spoke to!" and I saw who it was. It was the same person who spoke to me when the class photo was being taken. It was Steven Spielberg, the most famous Director of all time, and I did not recognize him. I guess I thought all the most important people were standing at the front? Classic.

That aside, it was still a truly special afternoon, one we'll never forget. Now I'm in the process of sorting out my dress, and childcare, and all the other things that will come with attending an event fancier than anything I've ever been to. If this was a precursor to the excitement, I can't imagine what the events surrounding the ceremony will be like. What a wild ride.

Kubo and the Two Strings

If you're in the US, this Friday, August 19th, you can go and see Kubo and the Two Strings in theaters! I have seen it, and it is truly spectacular. The film looks amazing, it's a wonderful story, and I think it might be Laika's best film to date (and I don't just say that because it's the only one I haven't worked on and seen 1000 times already). I think it's a really grand accomplishment for Mr. Jones and everyone he's worked with, and I know you'll really love it.

Mr. Jones has been having fun at the LA premiere these days, can't you tell?

Marching On

I haven't told you much about my new job as Multimedia Manager at a yarn company, but it's all been very exciting. I'm making videos, going behind the scenes of photo shoots, and knitting, of course. These are elephant vests that I've been making for friends soon to have babies. They're so quick and easy, and all the details can be found on my blog post HERE, as well as my Ravelry page HERE.

I'm also the host of a podcast!  Strange, as I never thought of myself as any kind of 'radio personality', but the retirement of the former host has put me in this new, fun position. You can listen to it HERE.

I won't be giving up blogging over here, even though life with two small people and a new job has me busier than I've ever been. I hope you'll stay tuned to all of it. It's so much fun, at least for me :)!

Neil, Norman, and Oscar

Just a quick note to tell you that "Paranorman", the film I worked on for the last couple of years as an Assistant Editor, was nominated for an Oscar yesterday for Best Animated Feature Film.  Everyone is very excited (not to mention hopeful).  Wish us luck next month!

P.S.  I'm also the voice of "Hair Dryer Ghost" in the film!

Today is The Day!

That's right, my friends, "Paranorman" is out in theaters today in the US.
Go and see it!  You must!

I can't tell you how many talented people worked on this film.  When I started working on it, there was about a dozen, and at it's peak, over 200.  I remember reading my friend Chris Butler's script during the Coraline days and thinking he had something special there.  Now, so many years later, it's being released in theaters.  I almost can't believe it!  I think the film is great.  Of course I would; I was not only an Assistant Editor on it, I voiced one of the characters (ok, a small but character, but still)!  So if you are so inclined, please go and see "Paranorman".  It's a wonder of handicraft and a delight to behold!

Quiz Question: What makes a good stop-motion animated film GREAT?
Answer: KNITTING!  "Wallace and Gromit" had it.  "Coraline" had it.
"Paranorman" has it, too!

WEIRDWINS, and Other Links

The film on which I was 2nd Assistant Editor for over 2 years is coming out in less than a month!  You should really see it, it's great; I've probably seen it over 500 times.  While you're waiting for its release on August 17th, head over to WeirdWins (click on that word to take you there) and watch some behind the scenes of how "Paranorman" was made (featuring some of our friends)!

Other links I wanted to share with you, that I've recently been enjoying immensely include:

*Two girls describe their worst haircut ever HERE
*Peewee, thankfully, always lends a good voice HERE (you know how I love PeeWee)
*I'm trying not to OVERFEED THE BABY.

Enjoy!

Off the List

Wow, where have I been, huh? The answer is, that I've been fulfilling a lot of Christmas/end of the year obligations. These are the kinds of things I expressed enthusiasm for when I had more time and energy. Then time became short, and people around me became anxious for their completion. Now, with almost everything crossed off my list, I can finally see some Christmas relaxation on the horizon.

This was one big accomplishment:

Back in Summer, I solicited recipes from many of my coworkers for this company cookbook. The recipes were so great! Then I lost energy. With the help of the Mr. Jones, and the lovely Vera (who drew this sweet cover and additional little drawings inside), and Jocelyn on proofreading, I madly rushed to complete it over the Thanksgiving break.

In the end, we had 136 recipes from 82 people, sold out all 130 copies, and made over $600 for the Oregon Food Bank. It felt good to do something for charity (something I'd love to get back to doing in the New Year), and felt even better to get it done!
How is your pre-Christmas list looking, good people?

Exciting news, friends! The poster and trailer for the movie I'm currently working on is out today!

ParaNorman

I haven't written much about my career as of late, but just wanted to let you all know that the film on which I'm currently an Assistant Editor has been officially "announced". It won't be finished for a while, but we're all very excited to be able to speak about it. You can find more details here.

Behind the Seams

I worked on a really fun advertisement recently, and thought you might like to see it. It was an ad for the clothing label "George" by ASDA (which is the UK Walmart). Because I had sewn under the camera before, I was recruited out of my seat in front of a computer to advise and reenact all things sewing.

Please add Hand Model and Art Director of Sewn Elements to my resume. Here's the result:

It was a really different job for me, if only because there was no animation, and no elements to composite afterwards. It was a two day shoot, with a Phantom HD camera, which specializes in high definition slow motion filming. Did you see that shot of the buttons dropping and spinning? Want to know how it was done? The camera was put on an arm, which the cameraman swung really fast as the Prop Master dropped buttons from above. The falling buttons were filmed at 1000 frames a second. Here's a sneak peak at the quick moment of filming:

All in all, a really fun day at work, with some extra sewing supplies to take home at the end!

And now, back in front of the computer, I'm dreaming of some time to use them.

Work (in Progress)

My work has been getting really interesting lately, as my hands have been sewing (and touching fabric, and grabbing pins...) in front of the camera again.

I can't wait to show you the finished ad I've been working on, and maybe some behind the scenes footage!

Love 4: Bristol, England

I've been spending some work time in Bristol, in the Southwest of England. It's been so nice, I thought I'd share some photos.

In Bristol, even the grafitti is color coordinated!

The bridges go between parts of the city and National Trust land, for biking and hiking.

It's very hilly, with beautiful houses that overlook views of the Avon river and the English countryside.

And friends you love greet you in the lobby. Can you guess where I've been working?

My Famous Hands

Now that the campaign has gone live, I can show you my famous hands! I made an ad for EDF energy recently, where I sewed a Union Jack flag beneath the camera, then manipulated the speed to make this advertisement that appears before internet videos in the UK:

I also developed a font (3 whole alphabets!) of stitched lettering. It's the same font that appears at the end of the video spelling "Team Green Britain", but will be used in further elements of the campaign.

I've never developed a font before, and I got really into the attention to detail you need with graphic design work. Go, Team!

Coughing Wolves

I was reviewing my portfolio the other day, and thought you might like to see this commercial I made over 2 years ago here in London. I don't want to use this blog to sell things, but I'm posting it since it's one of my favorite commercial projects.

I Have A New Website

HollyKlein.com has been updated! There's a new showreel, a new bio, a link to this blog and my email, and a shop with nothing in it! I do plan to have things for sale soon, but the making has been slowed by the moving. Anyway, have a poke around there, if you please.

Regarding Films, On Which I've Worked

Have you seen the commercials? Today "Coraline" is released in theaters! I was 2nd Assistant Editor on this film, and I'm really proud of it. I don't think you'll regret going to see it, especially in 3D. Bonus points for whooping when you see my name in the end credits. I'm going to see it tomorrow with, among others, the real Maggie and Mildred.

Speaking of, my film "Maggie and Mildred" has gotten into some pretty exciting festivals as of late:
Berlin International Film Festival, Feb. 5-15 2009, Germany
Sprockets Toronto International Film Festival for Children, April 19-24, Canada
WorldKids International Film Festival, March 2009, Mumbai, India

I'm relocating to London this weekend, but Furl has insisted he travel separately. See you there!

All Buttoned Up

Saturday was the wrap party for the job I'm working on. The film has a button theme, so I made outfits for the party. For myself, a dress made of button fabric:

Made from this pattern

And for Mr. Jones, a cowboy shirt made of black and white button fabric, with applique cats:

Made from this pattern

I promised, as I was making them, that this would take the place of my Halloween sewing. I guess we'll see if I can keep that promise...

The Roll-off Tea Trolley

80 people "rolled off" at my workplace on Friday. The film we've been working on is almost done! Every day of production, the stage workers (animators, camera operators, etc.) were served tea, coffee, and snacks from this cart by lovely Mylie (pictured below). For the last day, they let me do a special trolley I deemed "The Roll-off Tea Trolley". You know how I love a theme.

On the menu: (homemade) Lemon Roll Bundt Cake, Little Debbie Swiss Rolls, (homemade) Jam Roll Cookies, Tootsie Rolls, Rolos, Fruit Roll Ups, and Hershey's Good-bye Kisses. We tried for Rolling Rock beer, to no avail.

As you can see, I was on roller skates. I hung onto the trolley; Myle pulled both of us. It was a joyous day.

Obscure Snack & Career Update

This snack went to work with me yesterday. It's called "3075: Rats on Cheese Wheels". My current job on this film is coming to a close fairly soon. Watch these clips and look for the rats on cheese from (what's known around here as) sequence 3075.
